Carbon Neutral Program

Idesam’s Carbon Neutral Program is a compensation program for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The GHG compensation, also now as carbon offset, is achieved through the implementation of Agroforestry Systems (AFS) in degraded areas in the Sustainable Development Reserve of Uatumã, located in the northeastern region of the Amazonas State.

The main objective of the program is to support the local agricultural and forestry production, through low-carbon emission development strategies, which generate ‘carbon credits’ to offset the emission of interested partners and at the same time improves life quality of traditional communities in the Amazon.

Agroforestry is a form of land use that combines woody tree species (fruit and / or timber) with crops, simultaneously or sequentially in time. These two elements interact ecologically and are economically complementary, therefore optimize the production and use the natural resources most efficiently.

Species diversity also allows obtaining a greater number of products from the same area, both for the subsistence of the family as well as for sales, thus ensuring income generation and food security for farmers involved in the program.

The AFS is the cornerstone of the Carbon Neutral Program IDESAM and is deployed to recover areas degraded by unsuccessful agricultural activities. The agricultural model, used in the program, excludes the use of fire, and is therefor avoiding additional emissions and contributes to reduce pressure on deforestation in new areas.

Our Activities:

- Carbon offset for companies, events and individuals

- Development of GHG emission reduction strategies

- Estimate individual carbon footprints: online emission calculator

- Planting and monitoring the AFS’s in Uatumã Reserve, in partnership with local residents.
